Three ME3 generations in touch!

Dear ME3 network,

After two or more years of trying to get every ME3er in contact, we are close to making it!

In the last week, we have managed to link the 3 googlegroup accounts that each generation created to keep in touch amongst themselves and all posts from the ME3 Blog are now sent to the 2009, 2010 and 2011 generations!

For now, every post in this blog will be sent to your inbox through the googlegroup account. I realize this might seem 'spamish' to some of you (and we will try to figure out a way to start filtering posts by type) but it is a way to be updated on what is going on in the ME3 community.

I would like to invite you all to collaborate in this initiative by:

1. Posting comments: anyone can comment in any of the posts - if you believe you entry is worth of being a post by itself, send it to ME3 master blog and we will post it ASAP.

NOTE: only collaborators can post in the blog. Access is restricted to avoid non-ME3 people to post spam or other stuff.

2. Becoming a collaborator: as of today, there are only two ME3 2010 collaborators in the blog. If you want to post in the blog and have an active role, you are more than welcome! We would like to have at least 1 collaborator from each generation.

3. There are two initiatives 'cooking' in the networking project:

     a. Entrepreneurship: how to start a forum on ME3 entrepreneurship? The three generations have entrepreneurs that could benefit by sharing experiences and we are all enthusiastic about supporting their projects, so what would be the best way to create synergies?

     b. ME3 Know-how: who we are, what we do, what we would like to do... Our added-value lies on the immense know-how we possess. Not only a job posting network, but knowing who does what allows us to have in mind what we can do as a network.
Often in our work lives, we meet people who are looking for a specialist in .... and expert in.... the ME3 Know-how will allow us to quickly search for this knowledge and 'pass it over' to whoever needs it.

For now the idea is to link the ME3 LinkedIn group with all the member profiles in order to be able search by key word and find the right candidate, but we are open for ideas and volunteers.

This, by the way, is the 2011's company business model (www.daisglobal.com ), only we have a non-profit approach. ;)

Keep in touch!

Internship search ME3/PM3E 2011

Dear ME3 Alumni,

Remember how a year ago we began our internship search?
Remember how in the middle of a global economic crisis, we struggled to find an internship and thought that if we had a strong ME3/PM3E network, it would be much easier?

Well now it's the time for the next generation of ME3ers to start looking for an internship and I thought it would be a good idea to start a blog post on do's and don't's for the internship search.

Here are a few starting points I suggest, but feel free to comment on whatever you think might be useful, including internship offers or maybe getting an ME3er to replace you!

a. How to start looking - tips on how you started your search.
b. How to 'nail an interview' - tips on how your interview went.
c. How to find a place in a new country/city - the German experience? the Paris experience? The Kenya experience? How about the Mauritius experience!!!
d. The experience in a big company/research institute/small company/NGO/starting company....

I hope to hear from all of you soon!

And remember, " 'doing something about it' is the best way to complain" - ME3er @ Tribunal 2008, or was it ME3er @ Bouffay 2009?

List of companies

Hello everyone,

It is still job searching season for some of us and the beginning for stage search for the 2010 batch, so I've decided to share with you a short list of companies that might be interesting for the hunting. The list is a google doc that needs a lot of work, but still, it's a start.

As you might know from the last survey, we still have in mind creating a profile book in which we can have sort of a market of ME3ers; whoever is looking for something can look for a peer that might be kind enough to help out and however is posting or knows of an offer will look in the market for 'one of ours'.

Let this be the time to thank our most active collaborators Rena and Anjali, who have posted several interesting offers.

As for me, I can tell the ME3 2010 batch that Alstom is looking for a stagiere starting ASAP (January probably) in the EHS department, so if you want to look at the offer or think that's what you want for your stage, let me know.

BTW, the link to the google doc will open upon request but its access is free. It's only to show some courtesy on those who have helped building it with manhours of Bac+5 (that's expensive, you know?)

22/11/10: Since the idea of sharing the list is to network between ME3/PM3E and I don't know everyone's email, it might be a good idea to introduce yourself upon requesting access to the data base. If you do not do so, you risk not getting access to it.

27/11/10: It is your responsibility to manage the information given in the database. Please be aware that the success of this networking initiative is to be respectful of information that would normally not be available to you. Wrong use of contact details or sharing openly might put in trouble those who have kindly submitted it.

Please also be aware that part of the intention of this blog is to network, meaning that we would really appreciate if you tell people where the information came from and why it was given to you. Hopefully this will motivate some of you to start networking and posting.

Internship/Stage/Job search - Survey Results

Hello everyone,

Well, after going through our presentations at EMN I guess we are all a bit less stressed and with a little bit more time, so I encourage those who have not answered this survey to please do it and help us develop our ME3 profile (the survey is on a previous post and it is a google doc).

The good news is that during the days we were at Nantes we had a meeting with the ME3'ers 2011 and have started a small initiative to network. Hopefully we will soon be learning about their projects and we will now be 3 generations networking.

Internship/Stage/Job search - Survey

Hi guys,

Due to the good acceptance of the last survey, I am launching a new one to see who is interested in forming a group to develop some tools on job searching.

If enough people (meaning at least two) are willing to develop a DB of companies and a DB of our job search profile, we can maximize the potential of finding the right job. Or at least share the tools we are using.

Remember the question in the last survey asking if you would be willing to share your stage DB? Well now is the time to forward it and suggest a good format to compile them. Since they mean a lot of manhours of work, please let me know your conditions for sharing (public, public only to those who share, partial sharing).

Here is the link to the new survey, thanks for participating:

Some links for the search

From Nantes to Dezhou (China)

Here is a small text from Carolina Marin, who is doing her internship at Himin in China. Enjoy and feel free to send us your contributions on ME3/PM3E stage experiences. Enjoy:

From Nantes – France

To Dézhōu – China

I’m a Colombian woman commonly known in the PM3E (2009 – 2010/2011) and ME3 (2008 –2010) masters like “El niño”. On September 2009 people started looking for internships, but I didn’t know how to start. I knew that I wanted to do something related with green buildings, so I started looking for construction companies in Europe. I did a “lettre de motivation” and I applied to seven French companies, but I knew that it wasn’t enough. By November people were getting internships, and I hadn’t received any answer from the companies. I heard that they were getting their internships through contacts, but I didn’t have anyone in Europe. Also I had no experience about looking for a job, so I hadn’t thought about contacting people.

Finally on November we had a lecture with a Chinese professor about solar collectors and solar heat pumps systems integrated to green buildings. For me was like: –Opportunity to get a contact from one of my dream countries, related to a green energy technology giving green building solutions–. A great chance was there and I took it, so Carolina’s next destiny: Dézhōu, China at Himin Solar Energy Co., Ltd.

On February 28th I arrived to Dézhōu with two of my master classmates during a cold snowing night. Two Himin employees were waiting for us and took us to our home for the next six months, but I was in shock when I saw my new home. I think Chinese people don’t have cleanness into their basic needs as I do, but I was too tired to start cleaning. Next day one Himin employee was helping us with our breakfast, transportation, and communication; actually everybody was trying to help us they are very kind people. Just 3 hours with them and we realized that communication was going to be the most difficult fact during our adaptation, since Dézhōu’s people and our colleagues don’t have a good level of English. The day passed by and lunch time arrived.

For me and my Colombian friend Chinese food is not a problem we love it, but for my Ethiopian friend is not the same even the chop sticks were a problem. Work day finished and we went back to our home, and when I got there I bought all the products to clean my new home, it took me like four hours. Since that day everything was getting better, we overcame language limitation problem learning some Chinese words, using internet translators, and speaking slower with our colleagues. We accepted Chinese culture stuffs like people spit everywhere (restaurants, buses, buildings, etc), babies have holes in their pants to poop and pee wherever they want, and people don’t use street trash cans. I’m breaking my own taboos and eating new things like scorpions, but I have to confess that my Colombian friend is more daring than I’m and he helps to encourage myself to take advantage of Chinese food. My Ethiopian friend stopped asking what kind of meat dishes have so as to enjoy them, and now he uses the chopsticks. We also went to Beijing, and we realized that Dézhōu is a giant town. That city has parks all around the city, Hutongs (old Beijing’s neighborhoods) are beautiful, pubs and clubs exist there, old and modern architecture are mixed, there are public toilets everywhere, and people don’t think we are circus elephants walking through the city. We are walking money bags, though. Beijing’s people respect traffic signals, use street trash cans, and as always are very kind. I can keep talking about China and how awesome it is, but I want to invite you to come here and enjoy experience by yourself.

Enjoy my pictures! http://malsyjac.buzznet.com/user/photos/recent/

ME3 Networking 1: what is it and why do it?

Unpublished article for ME3 Magazine by R. MORA

Introduction

Since the beginning of the ME3 ’10 master we have been aware of the importance of networking: well before starting, people were already talking to each other on Facebook and MSN. Many shared a flat in Madrid before even knowing each other personally.

As time has passed, we have increased our network to IMIM in Madrid, MLPS and PM3E in Nantes, as well as ME3 ’09, Erasmus friends, former roomies, lecturers, etc. It can easily be said that each ME3 student has at least increased its social network by 50 new contacts with 17 different nationalities. This obviously represents a unique added value and competitive advantage for each one of us, but how can this potential be exploited? How do we capitalize this social networking into a professional networking strategy?

What is networking?

Investigations related to networking began around the 1930’s [1] although the concept became more known in the late 80’s with the boom of business strategy and finally in the last 10 years the concept has been used to refer to the Web 2.0 explosion.

Networking basically describes the interactions of an organization (individual) with its environment or context [2]. The organization’s actions depend on these interactions and with time, the context (suppliers, clients, interested parties) also becomes dependant of the organization’s actions. In this context, networking becomes successful as the organization is capable of building strong connections and is able to create new connections rapidly from previous acquaintances. Figure 1 shows a very simple representation of what the context of an organization’s network is.

Although social networking has become increasingly common in the last years, it is still done instinctively by most people, and despite being aware of the potential it represents for personal benefit few people have a networking strategy. It might be said that personal networks are for socializing, but in the job market, studies have shown that a job searcher who has a high amount of employed friends will have a higher chance of finding a job and increasing its productivity [1].

ME3 networking

As an organization, ME3 has an academic context per se, but it is also true that its international context gives it a diverse context (language learning, multicultural, plurireligious, etc.) and its management and engineering context gives it a leadership and industrial/services context in the job market.

With these in mind, creating a networking strategy has proved to be more difficult than expected, basically because we might be talking of several objectives that must be linked in such a way that it remains diverse, yet useful for all the interested parties.

Why network?

In this first part, I would like to propose some objectives of why build an ME3 networking strategy as a way to invite the rest of the community to become active in the action plan execution of such strategy.

T. Barkan, from Globalization Strategies [3], suggests the following steps should be defines in order to develop a succesful networking strategy:

• Your audience (current and potential): future, present and former alumni, lecturers and academic administrators or liaisons at universities.

• Your objectives (in no specific order):

1. Build a long term international community:
a. Keep in touch and updated with the ME3 community.
2. Increase participation in the academic market:
a. Recruit future ME3’s with high potential and performance.
b. Increase the master’s reputation and recognition
3. Increase participation in the job market:

Ok, you know i enjoy my food. Around the table we shared a lot.  You opened new gastronomic horizons for me and gave me new things to miss and long. This said, let me tell you that I went to an international dinner last week...........  some exchange students from the University of Besancon here organized it.  It was less intimate than ours: they charge 5e for the entry, then charge 1-2 euros per each portion and it was open to all the citizens here.  However,  I got very nostalgic, veeeery much, when i saw the names of your countries, when i recognized the food there....There were your brigadeiros Monica, and Caipirinha (they used the wrong lemons Gio). Unai's jamones and tortilla, Tacos (not the real thing Jose),  agua de jamaica, Adrianita,!! and chilaquiles mi Lalo!  Dahl but not from India, Anjali Maria nor from Pakistan, dear Omar but from Bangladesh, ahh?     Japan representation, nice.... but the sushi table looked empty to me, Rena. Ah David, I took some two plates of Cantonese rice... you can still redeem yourself and send me the recIpe. I wanted some salad but, apparently you have to go to Chile to have a decent salad :D (fuerza Seba) . I had the desert in the USA table, in honor of miss Katie Compton from Burlington! no chocolate with apple Andrew, but banana cake, quite good...... still, you are the master of the oven, Ilona Anne.
I was full already when i had been only in half of the kioskos but there it was.... Iran's stand and.... the zafran rice from Hesam. I had to get some of that too. Chokiiii, no Ethiopia there, but somehow another supper hot sauce made me remember you... let's say...intensely.
Anita y Raul, Colombia wasn't there.... well, it was me eating, but i didnt have a flag and I wasnt charging. So my next arepas, i will try them from you Katrina :D :D.  Mi Mae, i took some drinks on your name and on the name of La Inquilina. I came late for the indonesia stand, all was sold except for some delicious noddles, i remembered your vermicelli Ira, the ones you did for the Christmas dinner in Madrid....for that and the curry night, thank you always James  :). .  France wasn't there but in the local restaurants I have discovered my new deadly passion: The Raclette.....Joanna, Claude Francois, and mon petit lou-lou, I love your country! Ay John, organise another dinner with everyone, si? We will dance with "the fingers" step afterwards. Or a BBQ Antoine?

Good, I think you already wasted too much time with this mail, I just miss you.

Muchos besos y abrazos, take a lot of care of yourselves.

Con mucho cariño,

Angela Maria.

ME3 2010 Internship search Survey - Results

First of all thanks to all of you who answered the survey. I will not try to analyze the results, but I believe there is some useful information for us who will be looking for a job soon and for those ME3ers who will have to look for a stage soon.

Link to summary of results:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AnfTxGBrNxZ0dHZvR094Z05oNkVmS090NUJqaHRNcVE&hl=en

(Link is now fixed)

I now have  two proposals for you:
1. Most of you said you had built a pool of companies AND that you were willing to share it, so I will try to organize something to build a consolidated pool that we can all use as a search tool. Some of you might have used the list available in Campus and realized it is not very user friendly, so I am open for ideas to improve data management AND feedback on companies.

2. How about subscribing to this blog and starting a small chronicles of stage? Where you are, how is life, the company, the experience... etc.

Suerte,

ME3 2010 Internship search Survey

Hey guys,

Continuing with the idea of knowing a bit more of the ME3 processes, I have designed this survey to know a bit more of our process of looking for an internship.

The objective of the survey is to have a general idea of what we found and how we found it. I believe this will be useful not only for the next ME3´s, but with a little bit of extra work, to define our personal profile and why not a group profile that might facilitate a potential job search after the master.

Comments are welcome of course.
